EXCHANGING WORDS WITH SAPAN SAXENA

NEWS OF BOOKS

AUTHOR’S BIO :

Born in the city of Nawabs Lucknow, Sapan Saxena earned his Engineering degree from MNNIT Allahabad. His tryst wjth Indology began ten years back when he started blogging about Hindu symbols and signs and decipher the meaning behind those. His articles on Hindu mythology have been covered by major national dailies like The Times of India and Hindustan Times.
Currently based in Nashua, New Hampshire, he authored the National Bestseller UNNS-The Captivation, which won major awards and recognitions and the highly acclaimed FINDERS, KEEPERS which was based on historic Shaiva sect and symbols and the rivalry and the secret society of Nine Unknown Men.
The Tenth Riddle is his third work and is a homage to the Supreme Goddess Adishakti. Three people set on course to solve one of the biggest historical secrets of all times as they chase pieces of a daunting ancient mystery, piece by piece.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

That’s a rather interesting question. I was really inspired by the birth of my daughter. Me and my wife were expecting a kid and I really wanted the kid to be a girl. I started writing The Tenth Riddle around the same time and by the blessings of Adi Shakti, I got the gift of a daughter. So, I would say she inspired me to write The Tenth Riddle in a way.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

This time I didn’t face any challenge while getting published. The Book Bakers really made the journey easy for me. I faced huge challenges when pitching my first book. Major Publishers do not want to put their efforts and energy into a new author. Book Bakers came in for my second book and then for this one, it was an automatic choice.

Book writing is tough. You think of a story, compelling characters, try to build up some really nice scenes and then get hit by the writer’s block. You really have to push yourself hard to come out of it, and then with my day job, it became a really grilling task to write, but thanks to my family and friends, I managed.

 3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

I contacted them for the marketing of my first book and they helped me with the same. Later I learnt that they are agents as well and help authors pitch in their books to publishers and even help and guide them along the way. We have worked on multiple fronts together since then

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them ?

They are really passionate about their work. And its not just them being excellent agents but even their marketing division, multimedia division, cover creation, editing division, and all do work which is of highest possible quality. They also invest a lot of energy into their authors.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

They have been very supportive. They work in a very professional manner and help out with marketing tips and where to spend on, in marketing. Overall LHP are a very professional and approachable publishers to work with

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

People liking my book. There is not really another way I can define success for the book. It doesn’t depend on numbers, really, but it’s the wish of every author that his book reaches as many people as possible.

7. When can we expect your next book?

After The Tenth Riddle I have started work on my fourth one. There were a few topics I had in my mind and I have picked up my favorite of them all. One thing is sure, it will be based on mythology

8. How has your experience being working with Locksley Hall Publishing ?

As I mentioned, they are realluy approachable and professional. I never had to wait more than a few hours to get a response from them no matter at what time I asked it. They help with marketing tips, and also guide how to promote your book and even on their social media pages they keep on promoting their authors. Overall, great team to work with

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

If you have a story, write it now, otherwise someone else might write it. Do not lose hope and keep pushing your work. Focus on your weak areas and build upon your strengths. Also, pick up a good agent that can really guide you. Book Bakers has been a great option for me.

An economist by education, an entrepreneur by profession and a writer by passion;
Ayush Dewan Khurana, is a young serial entrepreneur from New Delhi, India.

He has been dabbling with entrepreneurship since 2009 when he started his very first company. Currently he is the Founder/CEO of ‘Modello Domani’,
a well renowned fashion footwear brand based in India.

His work has been covered by several media giants like Forbes, Vogue, Entrepreneur, Cosmopolitan, Business World, Business Standard, Economic Times, Hindustan Times, Times Now, IBT and several others.

Apart from his entrepreneurial ventures, Ayush has always been an aspiring writer and started penning down his thoughts and aphorisms at an early age of 16. The Reality Check is his second book.
Ayush draws his inspiration from everyday living, experiences, and most importantly his hearty interactions with new people.

“Your life’s span won’t make you stand out, but the achievements in it will”

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

The author, Rupi Kaur, infact inspired me to start writing in the format of Insta-Poetry. Prior to this book, I was writing more poetic quotes in the rhyme scheme of ABAB format.
What inspires me to write are mostly the current affairs, mindsets and real life scenarios around us.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

One of the biggest challenges for most writers is getting over that writer’s block. It took me well over a year to pen down my thoughts and then re-write almost half of it amidst the pandemic lockdown. As that changed my entire perception about life and lifestyle, which surely reflects in my thoughts in this book.
The second challenge and perhaps the most important is THE WAIT! The wait to find the right publisher to represent your work.

3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

I got acquainted with Suhail back in 2018 through Facebook, when I was working on my first book. He helped me with the publication back then, so I approached him again for the second one.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them ?

First and foremost I have to add here that they are very accessible and easy to work with, which I think is super important for that uninterrupted flow of communication. Suhail has helped me publish 2 of my books in the last 3 years now, for which I’m extremely grateful.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

Locksley Hall has been very patient and supportive throughout. They even shared their recommendations on a few pointers, which was appreciated.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

I simply see this as adding another feather to my cap and manifesting to become a best seller someday.

7. When can we expect your next book?

I have already started penning down my thoughts for the next one. Hopefully in another year or so I should have a volume 2 ready.

8. How has your experience being working with Locksley Hall Publishing ?

It was a great experience. I specially loved their promptness with which they work. Very quick and efficient.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

We live in a world where there are many talking mouths but very few listening ears. So if you have a story to tell or wisdom to impart, I urge you to write and express yourself. It’s one of the most liberating feeling to express via words.
And don’t worry about how it will perform, the main idea is to voice your thoughts and emotions. If done right, who knows maybe you can be the next best seller too.

BOOK NAME : THE REALITY CHECK
PUBLISHER : LOCKSLEY HALL PUBLISHING

BOOK SYNOPSIS/BLURB :

The one word which catches everyone’s attention in today’s world is #Viral
We are living in a time where everyone wants instant recognition and gratification.

a life that isn’t necessarily fulfilling but perhaps more ‘Instagram-able’.
An average millennial spends his life relentlessly chasing the two L’s - Love and Labels.
Our achievements and motivations are fuelled by a dire need for validation,
after all who doesn’t like a standing ovation, metaphorically speaking.
But where do we draw the line? When hashtags become more important
than words, and reel is mistaken for real; we know it’s time for a "Reality Check".

Based in Ahmedabad, India, she is also an independent researcher on ancient India - its civilization and culture.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

The adage - The pen is mightier than the sword - got me hooked in childhood itself. My faith in the power, importance and impact of the written word has increased with time. In the process of identifying the purpose of my life, I asked myself, “What will last long after I am gone?” Books were the answer. Could I leave behind significant words? Could I leave behind books that mattered? Questions such as these inspired me to wordsmith.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

The difficulties of being published are well known, mine were no different. What was different this time around was that I was introduced to Suhail Mathur through well-wishers. The Book Bakers and subsequently LHP, took away all the tensions of being published. I am smiling now as I hold a personal copy of this hard bound beauty - Shree Vishnu Mahaa Puraan. It is for those who rejected me to figure out what they’ve lost out on.

 3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

I was introduced by well-wishers.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them?

They made this book a reality, what help can be better than this? The amount of clarity and the degree of professionalism they brought on the table sets them apart.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

Like a true partner – patient with me and concerned about bringing out a highly presentable book.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

I am just 2 books old. How can I even think of success? I win every time some one somewhere buys my books. I win every time my readers feel enriched with what I have crafted. I win every time they spread the good word for my book.

7. When can we expect your next book?

Still thinking, will let you know.

8. How has your experience been working with Locksley Hall Publishing?

Excellent, they took care of everything. Their promptness is impressive.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

If every aspiring author also translated just one of our ancient scriptures, it would be a great service to the nation.

EXCHANGING WORDS WITH MEERA J PILLAI

NEWS OF BOOKS

AUTHOR’S BIO :

Meera J Pillai started her career with Deccan Chronicle, Chennai, as their Chief sub editor and reporter, a role she handled for three years. Her tryst with Radio (Chennai Live) lasted a year, as Head of Programing. After four years in the media, she moved to MJ Enterprises, Kochi, a family-owned HR and Facilities Management Company. Now, she is the Deputy Editor of Culturama magazine. In between being a parent and managing her work, Meera has found the time to create another world of her own.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

I loved reading growing up and writing came naturally to me. As a journalist, my opportunities to explore my creative side was minimal. Maya and the Sword of Gringak was born out all the made-up stories I told my son and my nieces. I felt there is a story waiting to be told and decided to write it down.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

Since it is my first book and a fiction too, I had a lot of learning and unlearning to do. As a journalist you are taught to keep your writing simple and short, as an author, it is the opposite. After finishing the manuscript when I approached The Book Bakers, I was still uncertain about the world of publishing, but with Suhail Mathur’s guidance, Maya and the Sword of Gringak is now a part of the world through Locksley Hall Publishers.

3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

MR. WV Raman, the legendary cricketer and also an author himself, introduced me to Mr Suhail Mathur.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them ?

From day one, The Book Bakers have been greatly approachable, which as a first time writer is an absolute boon. Suhail has been hands on with everything and has guided me through all the decisions. It was more of a partnership.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

One of the best things about Locksley Hall Publishing is the respect they show for their writer’s work. They have been appreciative and have given me complete freedom to work around my story.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

Teenage is where most children grow into proper readers, as did I. So growing up my favourite authors are from the Young Adult genre. For me writing for this genre comes easy and I hope, like how my favourite authors inspired me through many a moments in my life, my book will inspire someone else.

7. When can we expect your next book?

The next book will be the second part of The Maya and The Sword of Gringak, which is a 3-part series. Hopefully the book will be done in 2022.

8. How has your experience been working with Locksley Hall Publishing ?

It has been brilliant. Their approach is simple and to the point, making it easier for upcoming authors like me. They have also been greatly accessible and welcoming to upcoming writers like me.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

Just keep writing and working on your skills. Every little effort counts.

EXCHANGING WORDS WITH RAJESSH M IYER

NEWS OF BOOKS

AUTHOR’S BIO:

A media professional for over two decades, Rajessh M Iyer is a storyteller and has been a part of many media houses, notable being Magna Publications, Macmillan India, and Amar Chitra Katha Pvt. Ltd., in various capacities like Chief Editor, Creative Head, and CEO. He is the author of two books for children: Nanha Natkhat: Tales of Little Krishna and Valiant Warriors. He has also authored five novels: the Amazon India #1 bestseller, Evading the Shadows, a fictional spy thriller set during the Mahabharata; Hari and Friends—A Holi Adventure, a nostalgic, coming-of-age story set in India of the ’80s; Spinner of the Twisted Tale, a wondrous story of a storyteller’s life; Karmic Souls, a love story amidst spiritual awakening; and Mind Whisperer, a fictional retelling of the last four days in the life of Karna during the Mahabharata War. Uncle Pai, the biography of Mr. Anant Pai is his latest book. He lives in Mumbai with his wife, son, and father. For more details on the author, please visit his website: www.rajesshmiyer.com.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

The remembrance of those wonder years while growing up reading Amar Chitra Katha was the main inspiration. Re-creating that was, subconsciously, the inspiration. Though I must mention here that it didn’t strike me while I worked in ACK Media (Amar Chitra Katha). It also didn’t occur to me when I was writing other books. I must thank Suhail Mathur, my literary agent, who mooted this idea. Despite my initial reluctance, memory of those magical childhood days propelled me to acknowledge the merit in writing this book. I knew I would be reliving those fabulous moments all over again. It proved to be right.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

Lack of properly chronicled data. Hardly anything structured is available on such a legend. It was a wake up call to understand as to how shoddily we treat those who have done such yeomen service to the nation and a clarion call to do something constructive now. The book thus doesn’t stop with that alone. It’s a first step towards a movement that will involve everyone who grew up reading Mr. Pai’s creations and get him the recognition long overdue. We’re approaching the Prime Minister so we can talk of the highest honour of the land.

 3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

I knew about the agency before I became a full-time writer. Mr. Suhail Mathur, representing The Book Bakers connected with me when we had launched a new books imprint at ACK Media. However, by the time we could ink a deal, I had left the company. Since I branched out as a writer, we connected again and stayed in touch. And, that’s how the book idea came through.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them ?

Like I mentioned, the idea of the book was suggested by Suhail during a conversation. Initially, I was not interested. Firstly, I wondered who would be interested in reading a simple, staid biography about a person with lived a life without any controversy. Secondly, I felt whatever there was to know about the man who gave us such wonderful moments during our growing up years was there in the public domain. It was only when I started researching that I realised how wrong I was on both counts. Later, pitching to publishers and making sure I get a good deal, The Book Bakers have been rock solid behind me. I think the agency is doing a fabulous job in helping writers see their work getting published and their voices being heard.

5. How do you see literary success for yourself?

Still early days for me, I must say, even though I’m six books old. However, I guess I’m among those writers who taste success later. I’m surely not the runaway hits kind, though I do believe the time’s nigh.

 6. When can we expect your next book?

By the end of 2021 or early 2022.

7. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

I can tell them both as an author and an editor with over two decades of experience. I’ll pass them golden nugget given to me years ago by an elderly gentleman. He told me to remember the 3 Ps in life to succeed as a writer. They are: prayer, patience and perseverance. Over the years I’ve realise this principle works in anything one does in life. Specifically to writers another important tip is to keep writing even when the chips are down (which frankly would be most of the time).

BOOK NAME: UNCLE PAI
PUBLISHER: FINGERPRINT PUBLICATIONS
BOOK SYNOPSIS/BLURB:

Three decades of storytelling, over six hundred comic books, an extremely successful children’s monthly magazine, and millions of readers In India spanning at least four generations... This is the legacy of Uncle Pai, and this is the story of the man often referred to as “India’s master storyteller”.

Children growing up in the India of the 1970s, 1980s, and the 1990s, had one common factor uniting them—their lovely association with Amar Chitra Katha. They bought copies, exchanged them, bound them in sets to proudly display to everyone... And, even flicked them from friends, if they didn't own a particular issue! Growing up reading his creations was an essential rite of passage that escaped no one. And all this fun, frenzy, and madness was thanks to the epoch-making vision of one man: Anant Pai.

From a small village in Karnataka to Mumbai, Anant Pai’s journey and vision, which eventually touched countless lives across many generations, is as interesting as the books he created. Filled with little known stories from the creation of these epochal brands, Uncle Pai by Rajessh M Iyer chalks his journey and serves as a testimony of the man's indomitable spirit that helped millions across India get to know their cultural roots. Little wonder then that we too, like innumerable children, acknowledge his contribution by saying: Thank you, Uncle Pai.

EXCHANGING WORDS WITH NIZAM HARIS

NEWS OF BOOKS
AUTHOR’S BIO :

Nizam Haris is a copywriter and MA literature with Communication Studies student at Christ University, Bangalore. His writings have been published in The Hindu, The News Minutes, Indian Folk and several other online platforms.

He focuses on applying diverse tools of literature in his experimental writings trying to bring forth another piece in contemporary literature. Nizam is a conversationalist, passionate traveller and photographer.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

I am a literature student who has always been passionate about both reading and writing, I grew up reading classics and diasporic authors, it was always a dream to have my own book but never thought I was ready for it. During my Bachelor’s, I dwelled more into magical realism and absurdism, which had already formed a base from my past reading experience, I constantly thought about creating something new, something that the readers haven’t experienced before, it was about creating more than publishing. works like My name is red by Orhan Pamuk, If on a winter’s night a traveller by Italo Calvino, Happy Death by Camus and the works of Marquez propelled me in the direction of planting a new range of stories, literature at its base and reality as its topping, that’s how the stories in Rum were born. In two years, I wrote around 25 stories. The compilation in the book is after carefully filtering from the stories I wrote and then it was the decision to make it into a book.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

To be honest, I never faced much challenges, maybe it’s because, while writing the stories in Rum, the idea was not to create a book but to create some quality art and only once it reached the required quantity to be published as a book that I realized, I can give it a shot there. Regarding finding a publisher, I was not in any rush, I send to all the mainstream publications, even sent my manuscript to acclaimed authors. I got positive reply from 2-3 publishers, but I wanted to look for a long term method and I found The Book Bakers from the page of HarperCollins, mailed them and that’s how I struck a deal with The Book Bakers and then Locksley Hall. Though the publication process took a bit long, Covid-19 was in the background. There were many troubles because of it, but other than that, it was all smooth.

 3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

From the website of HarperCollins, they had mentioned that, if someone wants to publish through HarperCollins, they only take manuscripts from agents.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them ?

I pitched my work to The Book Bakers and they actually responded to mails on time, they provided me with three publishers, edited my work and offered other services. There’s professionalism in the way they handle their work, kudos to that. The best part is the author community that you get to be a part of, in totally awe of that. and the Online Literature Festival that The Book Bakers Organised was truly stellar.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

They respond on time and are diligent with their marketing efforts, so far so good.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

I am not sure of that yet, but like every author, I am dying to be published by either Penguin or any of the international publications. I want to work on a variety of writings including fiction and non-fiction in both languages, English and Malayalam. In short, I want to create an impact in the international and local literary world.

7. When can we expect your next book?

It’ll be in Malayalam and I am halfway through it, maybe within a year.

8. How has your experience been working with Locksley Hall Publishing ?

So far so good. Truly professional and diligent with their work.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

If you want to be recognized as a writer, always go for traditional publishing and try to go through agents. make a book for your own satisfaction and when you are satisfied, then only think about publishing and taking it to the other readers.

BOOK NAME : RUM: 21 ODD STORIES
 PUBLISHER : LOCKSLEY HALL PUBLISHING
BOOK SYNOPSIS/BLURB :

What if the book you are reading screams in pain and throws abuses at the author? What if that friendly chicken in the neighbourhood hangs himself one day? What if the dead fish on your plate talks?

The stories in Rum are meant to riddle your mind seeking for logic and reason. Characters ranging from crazy barber to the butcher who cut in his sleep, the themes here are a mirror on society with a note of mockery. Rooted in absurdism and magical realism, the stories here are ambiguous enough to make many points, leaving the interpretation to the reader.

EXCHANGING WORDS WITH SUDIPTA MUKHERJEE

NEWS OF BOOKS

AUTHOR’S BIO:

SUDIPTA MUKHERJEE
Author, Screenwriter.
Alma mater of Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute, Mysore; an awardee of Rudrappa Memorial Medal, for her outstanding academic performances.
Sudipta is a member of the Screenwriter’s Association of India.
The Space Between Us, her second novel has been published by Locksley Hall Publishing.  Two of her screenplays, Koshish and Ruuh have been taken by a production house, and would be made into web series for OTT platforms. She is into copy writing for Corporate films, Fiction and Non-Fictions, Social Service Films, etc.
To define oneself, I believe, is the toughest answer to give. Because life, as I understand, is an endless series of incessant evolution. A persistent unfolding of the self, discovering and rediscovering the ever-new versions of me.

I am a world entombed inside my mind; a world bubbling with stories. And in the very act of telling a story, I discover versions of myself, which would remain undiscovered otherwise. I am now convinced beyond doubt, that had there been no journey of words, my life story would have remained incomplete, untold.
My essence lies in the space between the lines and the gaps between the words. I am a speck and a spark; a moment of pause and a whirlpool, all at the same time. I am a grain of sand in this big universe. Or one could say that I am a universe trapped inside a grain of sand.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

Writing came to me as a natural response of two factors; life and reading. I am an avid reader. I read exhaustively, practically all the time. Which basically means the time I am not writing a story; I am reading one. And then, there is this life, we all know so very well. Life is my biggest inspiration. Every character that I draw, every story that I scribble is a reflection of life, in one way or the other. Life amuses me in a way few other things can, life teaches me a million and one lessons. I am a student in the university of life. And I can say honestly, that I am quite proud to be one. For, truth be told, there is no bigger and greater institute than life.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

I don’t recall a moment I had faced while writing this story, The Space Between Us, or for that matter, any story that I write. A story reaches me from somewhere inside, and I write it. The process is entirely organic. Beyond a point, I don’t drive a story. It is just the reverse. The story, mainly the characters drive my story. All I do is pay attention to them, and a story is effortlessly born out of me.
Getting published, yes, that’s a real challenge, I admit. But I see it more of a professional hazard. If you ought to be a writer, you have to go through it.

3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

From the internet, mainly Facebook. I connected with them and then send across my proposal. They accepted. That moment, I now reckon, was the beginning of my publication journey for this novel, The Space Between Us.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them ?

As I said, The Book Bakers accepted my proposal and we got started, officially that is. During the journey, they helped me with the required procedures, and providing me with inputs, like marketing strategies, etc. They are professional and helpful. I extend my sincere thanks to the team for their belief in me and my story.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

Of course, they are supportive and I am thankful to the team for that. My book, The Space Between Us, has two fonts, as you may discover during the process of reading it. I felt that was the best way this story could be told. My publisher respected it, this particular choice, and did the job well, unquestioningly. You see, a publisher and an author, is a relationship. Although in this era of commercialization, one tends to disregard this fact. But when an author hands over a manuscript to his/her publisher with the expectation of getting it published by him, there is an element of trust hidden in it. And trust is the basis of all relationship! Needless to say, I too have entered into a relationship my publisher, Locksley Hall, by signing the contract. And I look forward to a long and sweet journey with them.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

Success is relative and entirely based on one’s perception. Something you consider as success, I may have a different view. And vice versa. Of course, having recently published my novel, The Space Between Us, I would definitely want it to sell well; and I need support and good wishes of all my readers to make it one big hit. I also have many other manuscripts waiting in the pipeline to be published. But I am not in a terrible hurry to do things. I like to take things slowly, enjoy the journey and not rush towards the destination. Life will take me to my destination, I have no qualms about it. Until then, let me enjoy the bountiful beauty studded in the journey. Let me enjoy the process; the product, I am sure, will be taken care of.

7. When can we expect your next book?

Next month!

8. How has your experience been working with Locksley Hall Publishing?

The experience has been good so far; no complaints, no regrets. As I said earlier, I look forward to a long and sweet relationship with them.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

I am not a great teacher. If you take tuition from me, you are bound to flunk in the exams. I can assure you that! Since, you are smart or perhaps wise enough to use that word, “message” in your question, I think I have one for the aspiring authors. “Live your life as if it is your best story, and write your story as if it is your life!” And yes, do read my book, The Space Between Us.

EXCHANGING WORDS WITH PARAG KULKARNI

NEWS OF BOOKS

AUTHOR’S BIO:

Parag Kulkarni, a software architect by profession, delves into the world of literature over weekends. He possesses a keen interest in scientific & historical events with a specific emphasis on events that connect the two ethos. He is also fond of hobbies like astronomy and stargazing. In his free time, he likes to play with his son Advait and prefers to be around family and close friends.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

So the first time I wrote anything was my experience at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. It was way back in 2004. But somehow I could not sustain it. Still, I kept on investing in my reading and learning abilities and acquired as much scientific and technological knowledge as I could. Then in 2013, came the idea for my first book – The Peacemakers. Since then, there is no stopping, as I had found my calling. Writing then became a passion and I wrote many essays, ideas, and 2 books since I fell in love with writing.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

The basic challenge was the research required to complete the plot. I had chosen a topic for which there wasn’t much material available on the internet. Since this is a book that tries to find a balance between family and their scientific ambitions, the research required spanned from human psychology, fertility, philosophy to genetic cloning, astronomy, and mathematics. Add to that the research around Sanskrit-based mathematics by ancient mathematicians like Aryabhatta, Warahamihira, and most importantly, Bhaskaracharya II ( 12th Century). I also had to study some real-life cases of reincarnation and read books by some experts in the field.
As for publishing, it was made much easier by the presence of The Book Bakers Agency and my friend and literary agent – Suhail Mathur. Of course, we had to go through few publishers but finally, Locksley Hall liked the premise and selected our book for publication.

3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

So my first book – The Peacemakers, was edited by the senior editor Sanjeev Mathur. Under his guidance, Suhail Mathur started The Book Bakers and that’s how I thought of pitching the idea of my 2nd book to Suhail. He liked it and took it further with the publishers.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them?

As I mentioned earlier, Suhail understood the premise, provided valuable feedback on editing and pitching for the book. From that point on, he pitched to multiple publishers until it was selected by Locksley Hall Publishing. What was striking about him was his optimism that it will be selected.

5.How supportive is the publisher of your work?

The publisher, first of all, really loved the concept as well as the execution of the book. The initial feedback was encouraging and it led me to make the book concise. They also offered to sponsor the trailer for the book and supported it during cover design as well as final editing.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

The literary success for me is two-fold – First is that whoever reads my book, should get a profound feeling that they have read something new. The second is to be recognized in the field by fellow authors. All other aspects are superficial to me.

7. When can we expect your next book?

I am working on multiple projects, and the
most important one is the 3rd part of the trilogy of The Peacemakers. The current title of the book is – “The Return of the Peacemakers”. Apart from this, I am working on a non-fiction book titled “Child Education & YOU” about the role each one of the educated individuals can play in educating the next generation of India, and a funny dramedy called – “Hum Dono, Humare Dono”, which is about reuniting an old couple who had married separately due to break-up, only to find that their kids too are falling for each other.

8. How has your experience been working with Locksley Hall Publishing?

It was a welcoming experience for me. LHP as we would like to call them, first of all, really loved the concept as well as the execution of the book. The initial feedback was encouraging and it led me to make the book concise. They also offered to sponsor the trailer for the book and supported it during cover design as well as final editing.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

I recommend them to follow their heart, do enough research about each literary project to create their unique style, and finish what they started. There will always be people who would recognize your talent and style and appreciate what you have accomplished.

Her job is undoubtedly her bread and butter but it is writing that is her ultimate marmalade!.
So, enjoying life while it lasts and writing all she can!.

Happy reading!

1. Who and what inspired you to write ?

I read my first book when I was just 8. I still remember it was Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. My aunt or as we call at home ( tai ji) was an English teacher and she got the book for me from her own school library. I was 'ADDICTED'!!!. And since then words became my companions. I was an avid reader but writing started in 2018 when I met with an accident an was bed ridden for over an year. I was falling into depression and knew that I had to get out of it before it engulfed me completely. That was the first day I wrote a page. And rest just..... followed.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published ?

The foremost challenge in writing a piece is to write something that will engage the readers from the first page and will keep them hooked till the last. I think that anything which catches the attention of the reader is a successful piece. However, publishing or getting published is a different story altogether. It was so difficult to understand the pitching process, the requirements of the publisher and sometimes, even the basic communication fails ! But I am thankful for all of them as these rejections led me to TBB !!!

3. How did you come to know about the literary agency ' The book Bakers' ?

Well, I was sending my manuscripts to different publishers and Suhail Mathur was the first one to have replied ! And I felt so elated that he did !!! It has been a very rewarding experience and i feel that his inputs have glorified my project manifold...

4. How did  'The Book Bakers' help you and what would you like to say about them?

'The Book Bakers' was there every step of the way , whether it be edited or formatting, the title or the book cover, i was given some great advices. I can't thank the team enough for their efforts and cooperation
CHEERS !!!

5. How supportive is the publisher of your work ?

Well, I got published and that says it all 🙂. I feel that the publishers can really make your art count..... their little inputs and the technical know how of the market combined with my writing has brought my book to this shape and i feel so utterly grateful.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself ?

If my reader is happy, they love what they read and if it becomes difficult for them to put the book down, I'm a blessed and a successful writer !!

7. When can we expect your next book ?

Ha ha ha , there is still time for that, though I am really excited to finish the final manuscript.

8. How was your experience working with LHP ?

It was wonderful. The publishers are really reputed and know exactly how to guide and positively steer the author. The experience was thrilling.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors ?

Well, I myself am taking the first steps in the field of writing so I would just impart what I have learnt from penning my two books: ' If you want to be a writer - 'Write'..... Just be a persistent, consistent and an active learner. Just hang in there. The journey is arduous but the rewards are greatly fulfilling. Happy writing !!

EXCHANGING WORDS WITH VICTOR GHOSHE

NEWS OF BOOKS

AUTHOR’S BIO:

An award-winning social communications and brand adviser by profession, a former Senior Adviser to BBC India and Creative Director to Mudra communications, Victor Ghoshe is an explorer and a social researcher. Ghoshe writes in the historical adventure and paranormal genres. Deeply researched, his historical adventure The Job Charnock Riddle topped the charts as an Amazon bestseller of 2016. TIMES described the book as ‘Our own Da Vinci Code version’ (Link: https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/kolkata-gets-its-own-da-vinci-code-version-with-charnock-fiction/articleshow/51315052.cms)
Ghoshe has published three collections of paranormal stories in Bengali among which two have been bestsellers (Ethernet 2010 & Paranormal 2019). His literary works have been translated into several languages. Ghoshe lives in New Delhi with his wife Juthika and two sons, Shivank and Hrishaant.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

I have always been intrigued and inspired by the works of Arthur Conan Doyle, Allan Poe and then I got hooked to Umberto Eco. Eco was an Italian medievalist, philosopher, cultural critic and novelist. His works like ‘The Name of The Rose, 1980; Foucault's Pendulum,1988; Numero Zero, 2015 took me to the world of ancient conspiracies.
Until I was in college (at 18 plus), I had not read any English modern fiction at all (in high school my focus was mostly on the early classics). In the early 2000s, while working in an advertising house as a creative director I visited a filmmaker, and I found an old copy of The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco lying on his desk. I read the first page… and then the next…and then the next, and then I borrowed the book. Several hours later, I finished the book and thought, "Man, that’s brilliant…. and, if I try, I can do that." The next weekend, I began writing my first fiction in Bengali - which was later (2014) published in a popular children’s magazine of ABP group, named Anandamela.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

The biggest challenge for a research-based historical adventure writer is the ‘Research’ – the attempt to know the unknown, the struggle to chalk out what could have happened in between the lines of history.
You see, the research works for this kind of books are multi-layered. For the places I write about – I try to visit them, and if that’s not possible at all, then I glide through the Google Map routes; I study travel videos of the place by professional vloggers and talk to them personally to make sure that the descriptions are correct.
And for the more serious parts of my research, I study the topics and read research works of subject specialists from all over the world. After that, I take appointments and talk to those writers, scholars, historians, and other subject specialists. I believe, as a responsible author I must do all of these to be able to make a tough subject sound interesting and to be sure that what I've got is correct. May be my hard work is appreciated when my readers say that
I weave facts into a fiction extremely well.

Publishing was not problematic as Tomb of God was a second to a bestselling first. I had offers in hand when I started writing this book. But the struggle was - I wanted more for this book.

3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

A senior writer friend Mr Kulpreet Yadav once suggested The Book Bakers to me when I was looking for an agency for my book Tomb of God.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them?

I talked to Mr Suhail Mathur of TBB for the first time when I just completed writing Tomb of God. And we immediately got connected so well that I understood we would go long miles as collaborators. Mr Mathur took a lot of personal interest and care for TOMB OF GOD; I believe that’s why RUPA India materialised. TBB is extremely professional as an agency, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the team on this project.

5. How do you see literary success for yourself?

See, firstly, as an old school person I enjoy researching, developing new plots and writing…. and if my readers are enjoying what I write - to me that’s the biggest success.
Secondly, I believe that - the best stories intrigue its readers so much that they start to walk along with the characters and live the story themselves.
Now if my books can do that – I’d know I am doing good work and I’d be happy, because, I believe writing isn't about making huge money or becoming a star, it's about enriching the lives of the people who read your work and enriching your own life in the process.

 6. When can we expect your next book?

I am already working on the next novel. When the Covid 19 pandemic hit India in March 2020, I had already finished all the works around TOMB OF GOD, so I started my research work for the next novel during the first lock down.
After writing about the covert agency and the secret brotherhood of the tomb, in the latest, I found myself compelled to come up with a more secretive topic. Fortunately, I have recently learned about a shattering historical possibility, more buried even than the secret of the tomb. This new secret – if revealed, can change the history of the world, which will take the centre stage in my next novel. Until then, of course, mum's the word.

7. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

Read; observe life closely; find insights and note them down.
Then give your imagination a free leash and let writing be spontaneous. Keep your writing crisp but bring out the charm in your expression so that the reader not only enjoys the story but also savors the atmosphere you create.
Do not be shy about discussing with people, who you think can add value to your book and also talk about your work and promote it.

EXCHANGING WORDS WITH RUCHI MEHRA

NEWS OF BOOKS

AUTHOR’S BIO :

Ruchi Mehra is a Chemistry Honours graduate from Miranda House, Delhi University and MBA from BIT Mesra, Ranchi. She has been giving chemistry, physics and math classes for many years in Dubai. Encouraged by the improvement of her students, she has compiled her radically simple approach to chemistry in this book.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

I realised that my daughters’ friends were not able to grasp the concepts completely in the school, there were gaps in the basic concepts and they needed additional help. The students started enjoying and performing much better after I started giving them classes. This made me think about all those students who were not able to get any help from good teachers. On my daughters’ suggestion, the idea of penning down my approach to the subject in simple language was born. It is my sincere wish that the book reaches a large number of students and is useful to them.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

The journey of writing was slow and gradual. Keying in a chemistry book is very different from any other normal book, more so because I wanted to include a lot of diagrams, illustrations, tables, some interesting facts about the subject along with equations and formulae. I was also apprehensive about the publisher accepting to undertake this level of technical manuscript but luckily Locksley Hall Publishing took up this challenge and fully understood my requirements.

 3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

The decision was very simple: The Book Bakers is the number one literary agent in India and they have represented my husband for his second book which will be published soon.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them?

The Book Bakers was extremely helpful in getting my book published. I had to submit a few chapters of the manuscript and was confident that they will be able to find a publisher for my work. They are professionals who are the best in the market.

I would advise all budding authors to reach out to The Book Bakers as early as possible in their writing journey. Writing a book is just half the work; getting it published and then getting it in front of the audience is the more difficult part which requires working with the right partners.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

The journey with Locksley Hall Publishing has been quite smooth right from the beginning. I found their team to be very co-operative while type-setting of a technically difficult manuscript filled with chemical equations, formulae and diagrams. Locksley Hall Publishing is also very active in promoting and marketing of books for their authors.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

It is my sincere wish and hope that Clear Chemistry Concepts reaches a large number of people and comes in handy and useful to students, parents and teachers in building a strong foundation of the subject.

7. When can we expect your next book?

There are some ideas but then it all depends on the success and usefulness of Clear Chemistry Concepts.

8. How has your experience being working with Locksley Hall Publishing ?

Working with Lockley Hall Publishing has been quite stress free, thanks to a lot of effort from their team in typesetting the technical manuscript. I am thankful that they were supportive and patient with all the changes that had to be incorporated not once but many times.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

Follow what your mind says and have a clear purpose; nothing can stop you from achieving your goal.

BOOK NAME : CLEAR CHEMISTRY CONCEPTS

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

My primary school education was in a non-English speaking country. So, coming back to India and getting admission into a fancy Convent school turned out to be a nightmare.
I think it was my determination to overcome my teacher’s prediction that I would never learn the English language became my inspiration to write. I toppled that prediction by writing 10 books in English—most of them bestsellers.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

I used to be fascinated by the fluency and ease with which my parents, Mr O N Panchalar and Mrs Urmila Panchalar wrote their books in Hindi and Russian. As a young girl, I dreamt of becoming like them.
So I started writing very early in life. In fact I was convinced that my first book (which came out in 1992) would be an earth-shaking experience for all. Sadly, nothing like that happened.
Those were the Stone Ages for English writing in India. With no Google to help me, I had to make long train journeys to Delhi from Bokaro Steel Plant where I was working then, my manuscripts held tightly in my clasp.
Trust me, it was a nightmarish experience going from one publisher to the other. They behaved like arrogant gods and were very dismissive of an unknown writer. I remember one publisher actually asking me, “How many bedroom scenes are there in your book? I need those to be able to sell. Look at the new writer -S.D. who is emerging. Her books sell. Go learn something about this business before writing anything.”
Humiliation was something dished out in abundance to unknown writers from publishers who knew nothing about the art of writing.
Had it not been for my passion for writing, I would have crumbled and stopped writing. I did not, thankfully.
Later on, Divine Justice played its cards when my Mentor Mr Khushwant Singh called the fellow up to inform him what a great writer I was, after our book, “Our Favorite Indian Stories” by Khushwant Singh and Neelam Kumar became a bestseller.
Cut to present: I felt a wicked sense of satisfaction when the same publisher literally began begging me to publish a book with their publishing house.

So the challenge was of facing humiliation from publishers who treated writing as a “bricks and mortar business” without respecting the sensitivity of a writer or having the foggiest idea about literature.
The door-to-door experience used to be a very humbling one. Besides, they all demanded big sums, which I refused to part with.

3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

And then appeared The Book Bakers on the literary firmament! Actually I got to know Suhail and Sumedha before I came to know about their Lit agency. As Providence would have it, we were all travelling in the same car to the Khandala Lit Fest.
I remember thinking, “What an adorable couple they are! This young man knows so much about the English writing scenario!”
And on coming back after I researched his agency, I slapped myself for having been so ignorant. How I wished I had not remained a nose-dug-in-writing ostrich!
I was both shocked and happy. Shocked, because The Book Bakers had to its credit a glorious history of achievements. Happy, because now my door-to-door travails for manuscript-acceptance would come to an end.
I had someone knowledgeable to “pitch” my book to numerous publishers, all of whom Suhail knew personally.
A huge sigh of relief there!

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them ?

They are the best. And I am super grateful for having them in my life. I have no doubt that they will keep soaring higher and blazing brighter through India’s literary firmament with each passing year.

5. How do you see literary success for yourself?

Well, I think my life mission was pointed out to me after my two cancers. I wrote India’s first joyous books on cancer, followed by its graphic novel version and Manisha Koirala’s biography, “Healed”. It was very satisfying to see how many distressed cancer warriors my cancer books could help.

And then came the Lockdown. My mission expanded to writing meaningful, inspiring books.

Out of this felt need was born “I am Invincible-Thirteen True Tales of Courage, Grit and Survival” which was successfully pitched by Book Bakers to Fingerprint publishers. I was delightfully taken aback by the response it got from readers who found it to be a lighthouse of courage and hope during the Lockdown.
With the Lockdown extending longer than expected and the air becoming heavy with grief and a general feeling of hopelessness, I decided to reach out to readers and viewers digitally.

I thus created the hugely popular 12-series of videos titled “The Invincible Talks”. These 20 minute power shots of courage showcased my interviews with the invincible heroes from my book. They include a gangrape survivor, a domestic abuse survivor and a Heart & Kidney transplant thriver.
Watching these brave adversity fighters, viewers felt that if they can do it, so can I.
My talks are available on my You tube channel- “Inspiring Talks by Neelam Kumar”

So, for me, literary success means writing and creating content that is meaningful and helpful for humanity. That is the reason I switched from writing fiction to writing non-fiction.
I hope to inspire many more people through my books and the spoken word. Literary success for me would mean expanding this sacred space.

6. When can we expect your next book?

Several ideas. Several offers.
But as soon as something excites me enough to grab it, I will. My heart has to feel bowled over.
Until then the factory of my brain is busy brewing cocktails and concoctions.

7. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

Dear aspiring writers,
Do you know how lucky you are? You have Google and you have The Book Bakers. I am envious!
Having started writing in the 80’s and 90’s, I was one of the Pioneer writers of English language books in India. Along with others, I have worked and struggled hard to dig up a path for you.
I remember people saying, “When you write names like Sarita and Sanjay in an English book, it sounds funny. We are used to Sam and Cindy.”
Yet we ploughed on, getting readers used to this new trend. Changing perceptions and tastes. And we did a lot of physical labour.
Shall I tell you how I wrote “Our Favourite Indian Stories by Khushwant Singh and Neelam Kumar?”
I was learning the art and science of writing a bestseller from the literary giant and hard task master, Mr Khushwant Singh. He had seen a spark of brilliance in the amateurish books I wrote before he made me the offer of co-authoring a book with him.
With no Google to help me, I had to travel to each State of India to collect and translate hitherto unknown, untranslated literary gems in regional languages of India to make them accessible to English-speaking readers. I also did a lot of footwork to physically visit Sahitya Akademis., libraries and unknown regional authors across the country.
And every time I cribbed about the hard work he was putting me through, he would say, “America ke liye kafi kur liya, apne desh ke liye kya kiya? Kaisi writer hai tu?”
That would quieten me down. I always felt I was working towards a bigger cause.
Our book become a bestseller. What did I gain?
The precious secret of writing bestsellers was finally revealed to me. I also received invaluable training from a litterateur of Mr Khushwant Sigh’s stature.
Dear aspiring writers! I have bruised my knees and skinned my elbows to create space for Indian writing in English. The path is carved out for you. Now, it is up to you to pave it with gold.

BOOK SYNOPSIS/BLURB :

Have you ever been in the bottom-most pit of despair? And then, through your own efforts, worked yourself up out of the pit onto the cliff in front, kept climbing it despite bruised knees and bleeding elbows until you reached right up to finally experience the ecstasy of the breathtaking view from the top?
That is the feeling I call true happiness. Nothing outside us can compare with this kind of happiness.
Here are inspiring tales of thirteen “Warriors of Life” who have done exactly this! They have fought bravely and not only triumphed, but gone on to build lives more beautiful than the ones they had inherited.
Allow them to inspire you towards new possibilities, towards the enjoyment of each twist and turn down life’s road, towards the realisation and wisdom that difficulties and overcoming them are what make our “passing through this planet” the most amazing part of our human experience.
