EXCHANGING WORDS WITH ROHINI SATHE

NEWS OF BOOKS

AUTHOR’S BIO :

Rohini Paranjpe Sathe studied and trained to be an economist, completing her graduation with an Economics major from Fergusson College, Pune University. She later did her Masters (Economics) followed by an M. Phil, from The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, also then under Pune University, choosing for her thesis the study of expectations theories, focussing primarily on the Rational Expectations Hypothesis and its macroeconomic implications. She worked as a research assistant for a brief period at the Gokhale Institute, co-authoring a paper entitled “Keynesian, Monetarist and New Classical Economics and Short-run Dynamics of Output and Inflation in India” published in the economic journal, Prajnan.

Rohini returned to her first and enduring love, the pursuit of Hindustani classical music (vocal), re-schooling herself under the intensive tutelage of her Guru, Smt Madhuri Joshi, herself an accomplished classical vocalist. She imbibed the tenets of the Agra-Jaipur gharana and became obsessed with the khayal and its inherent leisurely unfolding and exposition of the underlying Ragas. She is also a composer of bandishes both in the pure classical and semi classical formats.

She has been writing regularly since the past eight years, her articles comprising her reflections on topical as well as personal subjects, having been published by Talking Cranes on their website. She still continues to blog (www.rohiniparanjpesathe.com), adding to this stream of articles and writing book and film reviews as well. She gravitated towards fiction, her stories centring around the emotional flux that individuals undergo in response to life’s intermittent challenges. Her collection of stories, Of Swans and Songs, was published in 2019. Her first novel, Being Good Enough, has been recently published.

Apart from attending concerts, a natural requisite and extension of her profile as singer, she loves watching and reviewing films, and reading and discussing books. She enjoys travelling across the world and then sharing her experiences gathered from exposure to different cultures, peoples, heritages, ideologies, art, architecture and cuisines.

She lives in Pune with her husband, Shireesh. Her daughter, Urmila, lives and works in the United States with her husband, Sumit.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

A school friend, Lila Ravichandran, and my music Guru, Dr Madhuritai Joshi, were convinced I could and should write and they had in turn tried to convince me. But I would shrug it off. Then it so happened that a medical problem brought a several-months-long hiatus in my daily riyaz, and as a means to fill the ensuing vacuum, I turned to writing. Words literally came to my rescue. All the emotional churning that is music poured itself out in the form of articles and stories.
I revel in the complexities of human thought and emotion. Love, lust, longing, greed, ambition, piety, mercy, compassion, honesty, deceit, there is so much that makes us the humans we are. It’s all extremely fascinating, an abundance of food for thought and material to write, inspiring my stories.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

So far writing per se hasn’t presented many challenges. Yes, there are days when the story doesn’t move forward or I am unhappy with what I’ve written, with the style or the substance or both, but that’s okay. Art cannot be manufactured at will, creativity doesn’t flow from a tap, I accept that, and I wait. During the waiting, oftentimes ideas that were nebulous become clearer, new angles or dimensions to plot and characters present themselves, and then the block melts away and I’m hammering away again at my computer. On occasion, I have had to do an extra spot of research, checking details that feature in the manuscript, and that can take time and/or more effort than I had bargained for. But I enjoy that. I look at it as a learning opportunity and I am the richer for it.

Getting published is extremely hard. Sending your author and book résumé to publishers and then getting either rejected or neglected, that simply batters your self-esteem. Then you pick yourself up and do it all over again until some brave person, Suhail Mathur in my case, puts their faith in you and in the quality of your writing. Sunny days, after that!

 3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

Through my editor, Samarpita Mukherjee Sharma. She is one amazingly helpful person who stepped up beyond her role of manuscript editor. She brought me names of whom I could send my publication proposal to. Suhail Mathur’s The Book Bakers came from her.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them ?

From day one, I was assured that they would do their best to see my book through and that I would get a good publishing contract within the stipulated period. That made me breathe easy. I was spared the entire agony of doing publishers’ rounds, spared the fear of rejection looming large behind every door I may knock.
And they delivered! And how! Everything was just smooth sailing.

Also, The Book Bakers designed the cover of Being Good Enough. That process was also smooth. All I did was to tell them what I had in mind, what I did and didn’t like, and voila! My cover was ready! It’s beautiful, exactly how I wanted it. Not judging a book by its cover is all very well, but in today’s world, first impressions count a lot. And it has been hugely appreciated.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

Oh, Locksley Hall Publishing accepted it entirely. They intermittently post about my book, either through a trailer or a banner, and that keeps my book out there for all to notice, piquing reader curiosity, encouraging sales and readership. I am happy.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

See, I write what I know, what I feel. If the reader feels that too when they read my words, if they connect with where I’m coming from and accept it, I have succeeded.
Yes, I would like more and more people to read my work. But I also want the reading to be fruitful. My words should encourage them towards an acceptance that there are all sorts of people and emotions and experiences, and that the boundaries of our own individual realities should not limit our understanding of the world out there.

7. When can we expect your next book?

Well, I am writing it. So hopefully, soon! It is a novel and inspired by my love of music.

8. How has your experience being working with Locksley Hall Publishing ?

Hassle-free, smooth, marked by trust and respect.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

The same that I tell myself every time I write: be honest. Write what you know, don’t pretend. And, breathe. Writing is pure joy. Feel that joy, cherish it.

EXCHANGING WORDS WITH GANESH LATH

NEWS OF BOOKS

Author's Bio :

Ganesh Lath belongs to the business community of Nepal.
A Karate Black Belt in his younger days, he now loves to practice Vipasana meditation.
Ganesh has been writing for the last three decades. ANURADHA BHAVAN was first published, in the Nepalese language, in Nepal. His other published works are Chhammiya and Aghatit (satirical novel). His next book, Chhamadaan, is in the process of being published.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

It is a very difficult question to answer. Although I started reading approximately at the age of 13 but my mind always created its own unintended stories since I can remember. A connection to my created characters started taking shape after I read books of Bed Prakash Sharma, Karnal Ranjit, Om Prakash Sharma & Gulshan Nanda. It was difficult for me pen my thoughts into a story. Gradually, my reading interest moved towards the book written by Munsi Premchand, Hajari Prasad Dwedi and Faneswar Das Renu etc. I wrote some poems and articles in Nepali and Hindi as my stream of thoughts started flowing. In the later phase, I came across the books written by Dr. Taslima Nasrin, Sudha Murthy and Khuswant Singh. I believe these authors and their skill of expression sublimely inspired me to write.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

Sketching the outline of the story in my mind came easy but “How and where to start from” was the serious challenge for me. I searched for implacable answers on google search, contacted a few authors known to me. But I could not find a proper answer that could nearly solve my problem. It was a bigger complication than finding a decent time to right out of my work and family. Eventually, I completed the first manuscript starting from the cremation place and ending at the same.

Being the first one to write professionally in my family and friends, every step ahead was unknown and complicated. It was very challenging to get a reply from the publishers I reached out to. Ultimately, after a very long haul, Lipi Prakashan, Kathmandu, Nepal, trusted my story and lend their hand forward.

I was still a learner, when my readers suggested me to publish Anuradha Bhawan in English language to expend it’s readership out of Nepal. In those days publishers were not very keen on publishing a fiction novel in English. I was overwhelmed to find a renowned author-Mahesh Paudel, who agreed to beautifully translate my book in English and I could trust him with my story.

I faced an even bigger challenge to find a publisher in India. After reaching out to approx. 50 publishers, only few of them replied, that too with a note of apology. Some of who agreed, had unacceptable conditions after which I came in contact with The books Bakers as a literary agent and shook hands with them.

 3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

I was researching all the suitable publishers in India through google. Fortunately, I was able to get details about The Book Bakers and fell comfortable with their process. Being totally unaware about the role of literary agent, it took a few rounds of talk with Mr. Suhail Mathur to learn the real process of publishing in India.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them?

The Book Bakers acknowledged my email with my first three chapters, synopsis and a small introduction of me and asked me to share the complete manuscript. TBB took a couple of months to review my story and later committed to support me.

They helped me with content editing, designing a very relevant cover page and finding a respected publisher. In addition, Suhail Mathur directed and supported me in finalization of terms and conditions with the publisher Locksley Hall Publishing.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

They are very professional, precise and punctual in their practice.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

As someone said, “to achieve something, you first need to start dreaming about it at the daytime with wide open eyes”. I started my literary journey with the same and later put an action to it. I was not very experienced in writing but was highly ambitious. With a lot of ups and downs along with some bends and curves, I stumbled but didn’t stop my journey.

When my first book got published, it didn’t get enough readership. However, It helped me collect a lot of constructive comments and appeared as a key to open the door of success in the field of writing.

My second book- Chhamiya (Collection of Satirical Stories/ Nepalese Language) got huge acceptability in the market. Readers started acknowledging my writing and started sharing their love. My third book- Aghatit (Satirical Novel/Nepalese Language) finally provided me the identity of respected Author. It was overwhelming, when a renowned Social Organization, Chitwan Sahitya Parishad awarded my third book. I still consider myself as a learner and the process of writing itself is a success for me.

7. When can we expect your next book?

My fourth book- Kshamadaan (Fiction- Nepalese Language) is due to get published within couple of weeks.
The manuscript of my fifth book is in final stage. Hoping, it will be published within this year.
As far as book publishing in India is concerned, Aghatit is in process of translation from Nepalese Language to English. As soon as it is completed, I will put it forward to TBB and ask for their guidance in the same.

8. How has your experience being working with Locksley Hall Publishing ?

My experience has been very advantageous as I have learnt a lot of things from them in this process and I hope I have been able to profit them in slightest of manner.

Good. I learnt a lot of things from them.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

I would encourage them to start writing without caring much about what seems odd or ugly, obscured or clumsy. Just continue writing and reading.

Read other’s writing and your own writing as a reader as much as possible. Never hesitate to make a change, crop or alter what you have written until it makes sense. If any idea or theme clicks your mind, don’t wait for anything and note it down immediately, even if you are half asleep or in the bathroom. It has worked pretty well for me and I hope more can benefit from this.

EXCHANGING WORDS WITH SANDHYA RANGANATHAN

NEWS OF BOOKS

AUTHOR’S BIO :

Sandhya is a dreamer, a writer and a globetrotter. She enjoys pottering around her home and garden in Bangalore with her human and feline adopted babies. She has published an illustrated children’s book, “Mia finds a home,” under the pen name, Sandy. She currently heads a Technical Communications team in an MNC and is an inclusion and diversity champion. Her fiction novel is awaiting publication and she has started working on a mystery book. Her site is varnika.co.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

When I was a child, my father was in the Army and had to go on inspections. He would travel by train and always return with one comic book for me picked up from the book carts in the train stations. I would wait for that comic. Before I could read properly, my mother would patiently read out stories endlessly to me. She was also fascinated by the world of Dumbo and Chip n Dale et al.

I then graduated to Enid Blyton books and devoured all the children’s books in Army Club libraries wherever we were posted. I lived in the world of comics and books, and when I wasn’t reading, I was dreaming of characters and stories. There was never any thought in my mind other than that of being a writer. So I guess my inspirations are my parents for getting and reading comics to me, and taking me to libraries. Also, to Harvey Comics, Looney Tunes and all the wonderful comics published in the ‘70s that seem to have disappeared now.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

I have a full-time job and I’m a single Mom, so this combination has successfully derailed my writing multiple times over the years. I can write only in fits and starts and keep losing continuity of thought and inspiration. I have to snatch time to write late nights and weekends, but I keep persisting. I was actually completing my fiction novel, when my father wrote his first draft of his autobiography, Burma to Bangalore. I then got drawn into that project when my father fell ill, editing, structuring, adding more stories and eventually rewriting it to make it more interesting to read across generations and families. I collaborated with my sister, Priya, on the stories and she took care of the photos.

Publishing went smoothly. I was already in touch with the enterprising Suhail Mathur of The Book Bakers literary agency and he took it upon himself to get a publisher to publish the book in time for my father’s 88th birthday. He soon got a contract from Locksley Hall Publishing and we could release it on his birthday. So grateful and thankful to both agencies.

 3. How did you come to know about the literary agency THE BOOK BAKERS?

I researched online about top literary agencies in India and The Book Bakers was listed amongst them. When I reached out to Suhail Mathur from The Book Bakers, I got a very prompt response and signed up with them right away.

4. How did THE BOOK BAKERS help you and what would you like to say about them ?

The Book Bakers literary agency is synonymous with Suhail Mathur and the words that come to mind are swift, responsive, connected and savvy about the publishing world, resourceful, empathetic, personal touch, coaching, encouraging, dynamic… you get the picture.

In addition to rapidly getting me a publisher, they designed a terrific cover that is evocative and checks all the boxes. I love how it’s turned out and it has been universally admired.

The Book Bakers have a prolific track record getting hundreds of contracts, and growing steadily through the pandemic when most publishing had ground to a halt. They were the first to conduct a huge online Lit Fest featuring hundreds of authors and bolstering them in their career. Speaking at this fest did give me the impetus to go ahead and complete writing.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

Locksley Hall Publishing have been highly supportive of Burma to Bangalore. Despite having a heavy publishing line-up, they worked out the schedule to accommodate release on my father’s birthday. They did an author interview of my father and me and supported me in marketing and promotions.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

I want to write and write and write. I want what I write to be published. I want what I published to be read. And I hope people like what they read and come back to read more of my writing. As simple as that. I’ve started a little late so I need to hurry up and catch up with my writing backlog.

7. When can we expect your next book?

My fiction novel is ready. I’m making the final editing comments and hope The Book Bakers can find a publisher for it soon.

8. How has your experience being working with Locksley Hall Publishing ?

Prompt, interactive, great print quality. The black and white photos look terrific.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

Keep writing. Keep improving. And sign up with The Book Bakers literary agency.

BOOK NAME : BURMA TO BANGALORE
PUBLISHER : LOCKSLEY HALL PUBLISHING

BOOK SYNOPSIS/BLURB : Ranga was an irrepressible boy growing up in Burma, happy in his family circle, when the Japanese bombed Rangoon and their lives changed in the flash of a second. The family had to flee and start afresh in an India caught in the throes of the freedom struggle.

He found his path in life serving as an Army Officer in the Territorial Army and fighting in three wars. His personal life was nomadic with family, friends and colleagues crossing and crisscrossing his path. Like the mighty Indian Railways taking him to various military postings and roaring through scenic and stark terrains, in sunny and stormy weather; his life, and the lives of those around him, go through its ups and downs.

1. Who and what inspired you to write?

It’s not anyone in particular that inspires me to write, it’s normally more of I see something in my day to day life or some sort of idea that hits me. When that idea hits me then the thought of sharing my world with others with all the emotions in it, brings such inspiration to me.

2. What challenges did you face while writing and getting published?

I will say they did all the job for me and made my journey as a published author smoothe. In fact, for every question, my answer would The Book Bakers team or Suhail helped to do this. They are associated with the author every step and in simple words, I will say they are real professionals.

5. How supportive is your publisher of your work?

Even if your work is special, it will be considered worthy only if your work gets published or gets recognition. LHP (Locksley Hall publishing), my publisher gave me a platform by understating that worth. They are quite lucid with everything.

6. How do you see literary success for yourself?

Difficult one for me, success. Success for me would be if people relate to my words and my works at times, But I am not worried about that too much, as I fear if I do I would no longer enjoy the process of producing work.

 7. When can we expect your next book?

It's hard to say. Maybe a year. But for the moment, I can say that I have started my second book and have outlined it. I just have to put it on pages now.

For me, Locksley Hall Publishing is the perfect blend of professionalism and family atmosphere. I really feel good about the way they communicate and help to sort out even the minutest of issues, if any.

9. Any message or tips for aspiring authors?

I think it’s a good tip to always ask every character what they are doing, and why they are doing it. They should be able to answer for themselves. Your own life experiences should help them answer, but if you find yourself answering for them, then something somewhere has gone wrong.
